The Health Benefits of Kombucha Tea
Known by the ancient Chinese as the 'Immortal Health Elixir' Kombucha has been drunk for more than 2000 years and has a rich anecdotal history of health benefits. Kombucha, which is a probiotic beverage unpasteurised product, made from naturally fermenting sweetened tea with a symbiotic colony of yeast & bacteria called SCOBY.
Promoting Gut Health
Your gastro-intestinal tract is now considered a most complex microbial ecosystem. As Kombucha is an unpasteurised living product, it acts as a high-quality pro-biotic supplement to help restore a healthy balance to your gut microbes - especially after taking antibiotics or with a diet of highly-processed foods, as these tend to kill off the colonies of beneficial microbes.
It is well understood that the microbes in your gut affect digestion, but their influence extends far beyond that to many of the body's functions, including physical and mental health.
Immune System Boosting Effect
Kombucha contains anti-oxidents, which are compounds that block the action of free radicals (activated oxygen molecules that can damage cells). Polyphenols are responsible for the anti-oxident qualities of green and black teas. Due to the fermentation process, the amount in finished Kombucha contains many times more than ordinary tea.
Kombucha contains multiple species of yeast and bacteria along with the amino acids, enzymes, organic acids and polyphenols they produce. It is also rich in B-complex vitamins and vitamin C (about 750mg per 500ml - the exact quantities vary between samples.)
Kombucha is resistant to contamination by airborne moulds or bacterial spores by its acidity and mild alcoholic element, from: acetic acid, ethanol, gluconic acid, glucuronic acid, glycerol, lactic acid and usnic acid. Usnic acid possesses a wide range of intersecting biological properties.
It is a potent antibiotic effective against harmful bacteria, such as E. Coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Pneumococcus.
Also, Kombucha exhibits anti-inflammatory and anelgesic effects.
Kombucha contains glucosamine which increases joint hyaluronic acid production in synovial fluid in joints. Hyaluronic acid functions physiologically to aid preservation of cartilage structure and potentially prevent arthritic pain. Hyaluronic acid also enables connective tissue to hold moisture which helps maintain tissue structure and flexibility. This helps to maintain elasticity and reduce wrinkles in body tissues, such as the skin.
Other beneficial effects include:
The pro-biotic microbes work on dietary plant roughage to release nutrients locked away including vitamins and minerals.
Normalising weight - these beneficial pro-biotic microbes produce intra-gut fats that increase satiety for longer.
It gives a well balanced gut environment and controls the growth of disease-causing bacteria, so counteracting inflammation.
Lifting your mood and mental health - from producing neuro-active compounds such as seotonin that have anti-depressant properties.
